The Dos and Don’ts for Fitness Center Operations.

He is currently a Clinic Advisor for the American Running and Fitness Association (ARFA) and is an Advisor to the National Federation of Professional Trainers (NFPT). John has authored over 250 internationally published articles for the likes of Muscle & Fitness, Workout, Muscle Mag International, Powerlifting USA, and Planet Muscle, and is involved in public speaking on topics relating to health, fitness, sports training, bodybuilding, powerlifting, rehabilitation, nutrition, and exercise. He wrote Strength Training for Performance Driving and co-authored the book with NASCAR driver Mark Martin. He ghost-wrote The Nutrition Bible, and assisted in writing The Sports Medicine Bible, both published in Japan.

John earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Physical Education with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He then owned and operated Club Nautilus, a successful fitness center in Horseheads, NY for nearly ten years. Believing that fitness centers would become more medical in nature, John worked as an Exercise Physiologist for a local medical center then became Exercise Physiologist and Marketing Manager for a local physical therapy center to better understand medical operations.

Soon after, John was hired by HealthPlex Associates (a fitness center consulting company) to open HealthWorks Wellness and Fitness Center, a medical fitness center. He later became General Manager for that center. Four years later he was hired as a consultant to set up entire operations and presales for Island Health & Fitness, another medical fitness center where he became General Manager upon the center’s opening. Both centers experienced profitability within two years with the latter center profiting over $1,000,000 in a four year period.

With over 25 years’ experience in the fitness business, John has acted as a consultant for several other health clubs and fitness centers including Club 47, Yorkville, Ill; Hanford Gym, Owego, NY; New York Sport and Fitness, Elmira, NY; and Diamond Gym, Horseheads, NY. John has also set up wellness programs for Elmira Free Academy and Southside High School Staff, Elmira, NY; Corning and Elmira, NY Fire Departments; and Cargill Salt, Watkins Glen, NY. In addition, John acted as the Director of Physical Training for the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy, Corning, NY.

John holds certifications in Master of Fitness Sciences, Specialist in Sports Conditioning and Certified Fitness Trainer through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA).
